Service Sessions

Service sessions were organized by the school for the underprivileged children from the neighboring schools. We were required to volunteer to choose any activity of our choice. Being inclined towards basketball for five years, I possess significant skills and ethics related to the sport, and hence I volunteered to teach basketball as I thought I will be able to help the children from my experience. All the students in the basketball section were divided into groups of four, where every group got 4-5 children. We began by interacting with them to understand their lives and then taught them some basic basketball skills- how to hold the ball, dribble and shoot. We also took care that all the children were disciplined and followed rules.

Learning outcomes achieved:

LO-5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

My teammates were supportive to a great extent. We divided our duties and assigned children accordingly. One of the challenges I faced while working together was that the juniors were not responsible enough to do the task willingly and often ran from their duties. But I kept my cool and rather than shouting, convinced them to meet up with their expected tasks politely. I recognized the challenges faced while working together and finding solutions giving emphasis to the fact that the overall objective of nurturing the underprivileged should not be compromised.

LO-6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

Worldwide, there are so many poor children who do not get proper food to eat, clothes to wear, place to live. Learning is something they would have never even thought of. It is very crucial to make these children aware of the other dimension of the educated world because they are the ones who will be the leaders of tomorrow. Keeping this thing in mind, we voluntarily taught these children so that we could give something to them which can add up greatly in their life. And they can be the shining leaders of tomorrow.

LO-7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

During the service sessions, it was quite easy for us to not teach the children and instead have fun. But even in the scorching heat, we willingly taught the children with full integrity and were always on our shoes to help the children gain a wonderful learning experience which can help them in future.

The final takeaway for me was the satisfaction and the sense of inner happiness I received after interacting and teaching them. To know about their lives, language, beliefs and being able to give them a significant amount of time and knowledge gave me immense amount of pleasure.
