Monsoon Musings was a literary event organized by all the grade 11 students. With the literary event, 2 separate stalls were going on simultaneously. One was the seva cafe and the other was the art exhibition. In monsoon musing, there were volunteer speakers who came and recited their write up. I was a part of the Seva Cafe. In seva cafe we made 3-4 food items like brownie, open toast, and bhel. I was a part of the Open toast. In seva cafe we were willingly serving the open toast for free of cost and just requested the consumers to donate money as per their wish in a box kept near the stalls. The money collected was donated for charity.
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
Here I developed my own strength of cooking which I learn in my Arts special classes. Cooking is something I like to do. The difference between my normal cooking classes and this was that we had no proper supervisor tell the exact quantities of ingredients needed and everything was done on the basis of prior knowledge. In this, the strength I identified was managing a team. We had to create more than 50 open toasts and to make that we divided the tasks between the team. After this event, I feel confident to cook on my own without any guidance.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Making the open toasts and serving the guests included a lot of works. Before the event, the working in teams helped us to create the toasts on time with similar taste in each and every toasts. I realized that if each individual was given to make a particular number of open toasts the work would have been very slow because each member had had to cut 2-3 kinds of vegetable but in a team, the tasks were delegated. Few members had to cut capsicums, onions, carrots and other vegetables while few were applying butter on the bread and others were grating the cheese. Working on only one task increases your efficiency as you get a stable hand on the task. After only a few people were responsible to apply the vegetables on the toasts. The delegation and efficient working of the team made the open toasts on time.
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The global issue we targeted here was fewer donations given to charity. Charities are an integral part of the society because it provides help to the poor and the disabled which one individual cannot. Also, charities are the only hope for millions of homeless and disabled people in the world. Hence we tried to take a small step and provided the donations for the particular charity.
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Given that we were a member of seva cafe where people pay as per their wish, we never force anyone to pay for any item they took nor we set any minimum price for them to pay. During the event, we just requested them to donate something in the box if they liked our food and if they wish too. Not forcing anyone was the way we made sure of ethical actions in our event.
The learners profile we catered here was principled, caring and risk takers. Principled because we were very honest and never said no to any person if they even asked for more than one slices of the open toasts. Risk takers because we were unknown how many people will turn up for the event, so we created limited pieces and they might have exceeded or would not be sufficient for the demand. Another risk here was the collection of money. Caring because we thought of the charities and donated the amount collected and not used it for our own gain thinking that the donation might help the needy.
Overall seva cafe was an interesting event where I was able to implement my skills. I loved to create the open toasts on my own with the help of my mates and without any supervisor. I also learned that working with care was an important point while cooking. This is important because I cut my finger while chopping the vegetable which decreased my efficiency and caused pain in the following days. I also felt happy when I got to know that all of our open toasts were consumed and consumers liked the open toasts.
