CAS (NW Sectionals – CAS PROJECT)

Ultimate is a sport played with a piece of equipment known as Frisbee. This is a growing sport and has players from all around India. This is played by 14 players on 100 meters field, 7 aside. This sport was introduced in India around 12 years ago. Usually, we have 4 main tournaments in India where each and every team participating has to travel which is a little expensive and not affordable by everyone. So to tackle the issue, UPAI (Indian Ultimate Committee) decided to organize National championship series where there will be 4 sections, each having 3 tournaments a year. So that people can go and play in the nearest section and I am in the North-West section. So my fellow friend and I organized 2nd North-West Sectional Tournament with as my CAS project.

LO1: I have never organized such a huge event and I feel by organizing this event, I got to know my strengths and weaknesses. I got to know that my communication skills are not up to the mark and I really should work upon it. I decided to communicate to people myself and my friend Tisha helped me. Accounts were my strength. I was very good at keeping accounts and records of people and the money which was one of my major responsibility.

LO2: Organising such a huge event itself is challenging as it’s your responsibility to manage everything up to the mark and you can’t afford any mistakes as every mistake will have a severe consequence. It was my first experience organizing such huge event and my fellow organizer and I wasn’t sure at first that we could actually execute this event but we decided to face challenges and make this event a huge success. We had to face loads of challenges such as finalizing the budget; because few teams couldn’t pay the amount we initially planned for a stable budget and so this caused us some trouble and few teams didn’t show up at last moment which again required changes in the budget. Also while organizing such an event, we had to make some quick decisions. This helped me as I was improving on decision making and critical thinking where I had to think critically and then had to take a particular decision. Organizing an event requires communication which helped me by improving my communication such as communication between different teams in different languages which again was an obstacle that we had to overcome.

LO3: Initiating an event requires planning and we started our planning much prior to the event. We started providing basic information such as tournament dates, location, fees, and slabs, etc to the teams. Next step was to plan and decide the budget for the event considering fees and slabs already provided to teams. We had a meeting with our mentor and head of school for the same. Tisha and I divided tasks which would’ve made certain tasks easier and helped in meeting various deadlines. Though we were there for each other’s back and helped whenever and wherever required.

Planning was a challenge for us as it required commitment and we had to sacrifice other stuff and commit our time into the planning part. We did require good communication between us and as we know each other since the last 3-4 years, we did had good communication which leads us to achieve our objectives. As soon as we completed our planning we start initiating it follow step by step as planned. The initiating process wasn’t tough as we did had support from fountainhead school and its staff which made our work little easier and therefore make this event a huge success.

The event made me realize that I can handle such pressure of organizing an event and maybe it also taught me to accept my mistakes and re-do it and make things right before it got worst. And if something could’ve gone wrong, I would’ve taken responsibility for my actions and that was my life learning lesson I learned throughout the event.

LO4: As I stated, we had to commit to the event as it required lots of planning and with our tight schedule, we weren’t sure if we could organize this event without commitment and dedication.

I am the type of person who doesn’t commit easily and if in certain cases I do, I make sure that it is a short time commitment. But I had to evolve this part of my life and organizing this event was a kind of quick-start which definitely will help me in real life and future.

LO5: Coordination was the best part of the event. My friend and I were good communicators and so we didn’t have much miscommunication and at the same time, it was easy to communicate for me with the school staff. Because I am a part of this school since 2012, I knew whom to approach for a particular task. Teamwork is a key to success as everyone would collaborate and give different ideas which were really helpful for the event. We also divided responsibilities as mentioned earlier which helped us become independent and were helping each other to overcome a challenge when someone lacked.

LO7: As this was our CAS Project, and players weren’t financially stable, we provided slabs of 200/400 and an option of the actual per-person fees of 800 to all the participants. We weren’t sure we did the right thing but we did what our instincts said. We were planning to provide slabs for weeks as every time we decided on something we had to rethink and make a decision again. We (Fountainhead school event team) did have so much financial pressure but we did what we thought was ethically correct.

Overall, to sum up, this event really helped me to grow as a person and to explore certain skills such as time management, coordination, teamwork, communication, etc which maybe I wouldn’t have explored otherwise.
