Service session

As part of CAS, I choose to attend a service session that gave me an opportunity to teach underprivileged students. It was a 7-day session (Saturday) organized by the school. We were supposed to teach them a sport/game/art. I choose the game frisbee because I am learning it and I also like to play it. 30-40 students came 7 consecutive Saturday to learn for the same we were supposed to plan and be ready to teach them with all the necessary resources.

How we organized and difficulty in that process

The basic plan includes warm up, throws and catches, cool down and drills. I recognized that teaching was not easy requires planning and skills which acted as an area of growth for me but as I knew how to play frisbee it helped me put my knowledge and skills to work.

One more major difficulty I faced was the connection with the children because few couldn’t understand the language I used but within 2 sessions I got used to the language and could connect better with them. To mix up with them and understand there interest/personality we also did activities.

Learning outcome

L2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

  • Commitment

Which we were also given a certificate to be punctual for sessions, showcasing hard work for 7 Saturday’s

  • Perseverance

In spite of giving up, I faced the difficulty and learned language both of us were comfortable with

L5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

  • Communication and collaboration

Everyone had a different style of teaching which

helped children learn better, as well as there, were a double number of children present than us so each person could individually concentrate and teach 2 students. In a few activities, we also collaborated

to understand everyone. Working collaboratively helped me to understand the language better and communicate

Conclusion

The overall task was challenging and a new task wherein I had to share my knowledge, learn from them and understand teaching style helped me. This experience taught me that neither teaching is easy nor being privileged for education and resources. So being responsible and learning the importance of the same is necessary.
