Teaching – Visual arts

We were three people who went to the government school to teach about arts. Passing on your learning helps you develop and so I decided to teach one of the most creative aspects of my strength arts. I have been learning about arts from drawing a scenario to using colors and more. It was important that I understand the age group, I was going to teach and their level of exposure to education. Doing it for students who might not have access to the resources required or a guide for them will make more sense, than doing it just for those people who are going to learn it anyways. Our main objective was to give information to the students of government school about the elements of art like Line, Shapes, Colour. We planned a few activities like teaching Varli painting form of cultural art. The different shapes like circle and triangle are used in this art form. Similarly other activities online, value, etc.

L01: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
We were three people who went to the government school and all of us were interested in arts that acted as a strength these are few of my works from grade 1 to grade 10. My strength was also communication which I developed through a previous session I attended. Being a Gujarati knowing my mother tongue helped, studying Hindi as a subject helped whereas my other friend’s dint knows or understand Hindi and Gujarati language.

LO 5:-Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working in the team did help me a lot, as I was not able to manage my time to work. The task had been divided according to the skills possessed by each. My partner helped me to gain a positive attitude and kept on motivating me that I should take up this activity. If my teammates were not there I might have quit from the event, they made me realize that the smile on every face that also counts. During this activity, my teammate had a big conflict with each other when we were managing the things and how to execute the event flow. Generally, never happened between them but somehow I helped in resolving those conflicts. This helps me understand how important it is to work with some people and how to be patient in a certain situation. I also understand that sometimes those people can also help you out of your problems.

LO 6:-Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
We thought of doing this with the aim of teaching students the basic of arts. We changed our target students from the kids in our school to the kids in a Government school, because they might not be having the required art materials and also they might not have someone to teach art to them as the stream of arts have been removed from many schools. More effective as I already mentioned above. Teaching a bunch of 20 students what are the principles of art is maybe a small step towards the idea but it is a start to something. We also tried our best to make these activities engaging as possible by adding games with arts like running. We also had group activities so kept the students interacted and enthusiastic.

I am leading the activity by standing on height and interacting with the students.

LO 7:-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We did think of withdrawing from the event but we have taken all the required permissions from both the schools, so dropping out of the event will not be an appropriate option. We also made sure that we teach them all the things we plan and not leave out just because the students are not enjoying the event.

The event ended up being fun for me. I was very interactive at first when I had to talk to the teachers and give instructions to the students but soon as my teammates understood the language and got comfortable they also started interacting. It also helped me understand what are the necessities of planning an event and knowing different languages is an advantage.
