PS- Basketball

Our school offers various sport options to choose from and polish our skills in whichever sport we wish to develop in our PS (Personal Sports) slots. I chose Basketball for grade 11th and 12th as well, as a long term activity.

LO1- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

Before I even opted for Basketball, I never knew I would play such a  sport in my entire life and enjoy it so much. Once I started playing Basketball, I realized my strengths in it. My height, my jump, and speed were very advantageous to me. Because of them, I was very good at Rebounding and defending a player. Therefore, anytime while playing, I am always a Rebounder and play at zero position. When I started playing, I also realized that I was very bad with controlling the ball and shooting. I always had a fear of getting defended when the ball was in my hand. However, to overcome the weakness, my coach guided me and asked me to do certain skills which would improve my controlling and shooting. Also, my friends have supported me to build confidence while playing. This has resulted in a drastic improvement in my play and I have gained much more confidence than before.

LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

Earlier, I used to play Ultimate in my PS slots. After I shifted to Basketball in my PS slots, I wasn’t able to give time to Ultimate. Gradually, my play was being affected. There was an increase in dropping catches and throwaways. This affected me a lot emotionally and decreased my confidence. Therefore, I decided to overcome this issue. I decided to manage my time so that I got some free time on weekends and I started going to camps for Ultimate. In such a manner, I am now able to focus on both sports.  While overcoming this challenge, I have developed my self-management skills which is very important for an individual to reduce their stress and do all the things they love.

LO4- Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

When I started playing Basketball, for the first 2 months, I only did drills. After that, for nearly 2-3 months, whenever we played a match, I hardly used to get any passes and I was rarely a part of the game. This demotivated me to such an extent that I thought of dropping Basketball and get back to Ultimate in PS. However, then I realized that if I put in more efforts while playing and not be scared of making mistakes, it will help me improve my skills and people will start trusting me and will pass the ball. Therefore, now I play more confidently and don’t fear to make mistakes which has helped me improve a lot.
