Balmela

Since 2012 fountainhead school is organizing an event called Balmela all the responsibilities are handed over to students and the school provides resources and guidance. There are various and varied activities each requires a student to manage the activity like dance, nail art, face painting, running, 2 legged race and many more. It is a one-day event. This event is organized for unprivileged students to make them experience something overwhelming and exciting, different from their usual routine. This year I was assigned to manage a game on a playground in this game 2 pairs tie there leg together and run such 6 ṕairs run together who wins gets a gift like a pen, pencil, crayon, sketch pen and more. There was excitement and happiness on there face so it was satisfying to see that.

Learning outcome
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth
I can jell well with students below my age and can also manage them because I have a smaller sister. Being in balmela I developed my strengths in managing more than one kid I also worked upon my weakness. It was very difficult to stand in the sun and speak Gujarati which they understand anyways we kept swapping activities with other people. Even learned to manage a crisis when many bus dint come on time we lacked volunteers.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Just Before Balmela took place, grade 12 farewell (that was my project) for the last batch was organized. So we were very tired and exhausted and we even didn’t have sufficient or ample amount of sleep, So sleeping late and waking up early was really tiresome and when balmela took place I was not in mood at all to sacrifice my sleep and it was on Saturday so I had to sacrifice my study time also but when I actually thought about those children, I could not back off at the last moment and I knew I will do it for them. I overcame and faced the challenge because it also made me feel good about what I was doing.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Games and we needed to decide how we want to draw the activity. There were around 10 to 12 pieces of cloth and many kids coming in a group, the area we were given was quite small so we needed to arrange everyone in such a way that everybody could run without bashing into one another so we made 5 pairs run at a time. We also decided the distance, we kept is approximately 40 meters. I was the starter (the one starting the race) and my buddy was standing at the end of 40 meters to make sure children reach till there and who has won the race.

LO4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experience
Before the event started and during the event, I showed commitment to putting up the event together. Making sure the required resources are placed at the venue, getting the resources and standing in the scorching heat so that we can manage participants coming to play particular events.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively
It was a very sunny day and conducting the whole event was difficult and dehydrating so we four friends kept on switching places so we can conduct the event in shade and smoothly. The event was organized by 3 people who very well bifurcated the task in spite of some setbacks at the end.

L6: Engagement with issues of global significance
Poverty is an issue in India, as well as education lack of resources due to a lack of finance in the education sector, is affecting the students of government schools. Balmela focuses on providing such schools with resources, games and fun activities.

To end this, I would say this event helped me boost my confidence and talk to people. It made me grow more as a person. It made me realize how grateful I am, as I can afford all of these things and enjoy my life. This will be a memorable event where I could incorporate the skills previously learned, attributes and learner profiles into practice. I would surely take such opportunities in the future which helps in the betterment of society.
