Monsoon Musings

A literary event is known to serve as one of the best platforms for the display and invoke of words, ideas and emotions. Monsoon Musings was one such literary event.  I volunteered to take part in Sewa Cafe. The main purpose of Sewa Cafe was to serve all the guests visiting the art stalls and the literary event without any charge, where the guests were free to offer money according to their will. The volunteers of the Sewa Cafe were required to bring the materials required to prepare the food items from home, collaboratively work together and serve. I was assigned to work in the sandwich stall, where I brought cabbages and cheese from home. We cut capsicums, carrot, cabbages; we grated cheese; we prepared the breads by applying butter and finally, stuff all of them with the sandwich fill and sent them in the oven.

Learning outcomes achieved:

LO-2 : Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

Cooking, not being my cup of tea, isn’t an activity which I would ever do willingly at home. But during the event, I learnt how to cut vegetables in a perfect manner and worked in the kitchen for the first time showcasing that I undertook challenges and developed new skills.

LO-5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

All the students were grouped into stalls and we had to work together collaboratively. We were 7-8 students in the sandwich stall and we helped each other to make the task fast and easier; one of my mates taught me how to cut the vegetables and I helped the group to apply butter, grate the cheese and serve. Having each other’s back while doing our assigned tasks evidently made our work much more fun and easier.

LO-7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

As this event was a fundraiser, we weren’t going to get anything but that didn’t affect our efforts put forward. We willingly worked and served all the visitors. Additionally, we only ate the leftovers keeping in mind the consequences of our actions.

For me, the final takeaway of the event was that you should always be ready to take challenges as it makes you a better person not just in that field, but enhances your overall personality. Furthermore, nothing can make you happier than serving others, so we should be willing to be there for service.
