Arts for everyone

Arts for everyone is an event where we had to teach government school students drawing and painting and then at last conduct a competition amongst them. I had volunteered as a helper to the organisers to help them to set up and teach a bit to the students. This event took place on 2 Saturdays in a month, for 1 month. The organiser collected the unused and no longer used painting equipment like paintbrushes, watercolours, pencils, erasers, etc from students as a donation to help. I had contributed a few brushes and pencils. This event was a very good idea as, by this event, the government school students try and learn something new which makes them happy and smile.

Learning Outcomes-

Lo2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process-

The biggest challenge we faced was that almost all the students did not know how to draw and use watercolours to paint. So we ourself sat next to the children and taught them how to use watercolours and how to draw normal things like scenery containing mountains, river and a house(the one almost every child draws in their childhood). We could then see that some students were not knowing how to use a few resources and were damaging them, so we taught them how to use them and avoid wastage of resources. I never knew that I would be good with watercolours while teaching a student, I myself tried water colouring and it turned out a good artwork as it was appreciated by a few fellow helpers. This made me feel happy as to I initially used to believe that I was a really bad artist.

Lo4- Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experience-

The location where the event was going to occur was a 40-minute drive from my house, and the timings of the event were early morning. So if I had gone to the location from my home early morning, I would definitely reach late and also I would have to disturb my parents sleep as they would have to drop me. So I thought of an idea that I can stay at one of the organiser’s house which was just 5-10 minutes from the location of the event and we could have gone to the event together. The organiser agreed and so we did a night hold at the organiser’s house before both the days of the event. By this, I reached the location on time and showed my dedication and commitment to my work.

Lo5- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively-

I really enjoy the company of other while working on a task. It keeps me focused and completes the task with more ease. Working together for this event was very necessary because we had to teach the children how to draw and paint and so we had divided each volunteer to a few students and so the students would learn easily as they would get personal attention and their doubts can be solved more quickly and they also feel the sense of connectivity.

Lo6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance-

The scarcity of water is a big global issue. It is very evident that while using watercolours, we need water. The students present there were near 70-80 students. When we started doing water colouring, we firstly asked for water, they brought fresh tap water. Now a lot of water was required as we had to do water colouring and doing it on 2 days means more wastage of fresh water. It was the rainy season, I saw a puddle where a bit muddy water was stored, I went and collected that water instead of the fresh water and used it for water colouring, using a bit muddy water created no difference. By this method, I used the wastewater and save the fresh water. This is a small step to save water but this made them aware how to use the surroundings well.

My takeaways-

  1. We should know how to use the surrounding well and do not waste natural resources.
  2. I used thinker as my learner profile as I brainstormed and found a possible way to prevent fresh water from getting wasted.
  3. This activity made me feel very enthusiastic and gave me a sense of satisfaction as I helped government school students to learn something new.
