Service Sessions at FS!

Service Sessions were held in our school for 6 consecutive Saturdays from 14 July to 28 August. Our school invited children from underprivileged school to teach them various things. We were given an option to teach them Sports, Cooking, ICT and Dance. I chose to teach these children cooking because personally I like cooking and I also think it should be taught to everyone as it is a basic survival skill. These children came every Saturday and we( my peers, a few teachers and some of the support staff people) taught them to cook different things every Saturday. The goal for this activity was to help these children develop cooking skills so that they can use them when required. These skills are not taught to them at their school so our school took the initiative to help them and I volunteered for the same.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Working collaboratively was a very important part of this activity. Usually, I am good at collaboration so it was not very difficult for me to collaborate with the others and the children who had come. The children were so excited but also disciplined and listened to all the instructions. Communication was a little difficult while instructing them because I am not very good at Gujarati and they spoke mostly Gujarati but over time I got comfortable. By working collaboratively with these children, our teachers and support staff I learnt a lot. I realized how important it is to work together in peace to fulfil the goal which was to teach these children to cook various dishes.

LO6 : Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

The global issue of poverty and lack of basic life skills in underprivileged children was catered in this programme. It is very important for children all around the world to know skills like ICT, cooking and Arts to know what they want to do in life and to be able to survive in this developing world. Knowing about this issue made me volunteer in these sessions. While attending these sessions I realized this is a serious issue and it is important to help these kids to learn the skills because they lacked them. I felt really happy that I could help them to learn something that will help them in the future. I realized such initiatives are required all over the world for children who can’t afford to learn these skills or who do not have the required resources.

After attending these service sessions and volunteering in them I realized I could contribute to society by just doing that I know. I had a great experience during these sessions and I felt blessed to get the opportunity. I learnt a little about how cooking was done at these children’s homes and I also realized that it is not very difficult to spread happiness. Whenever we successfully cooked these children were so happy and I felt great. The best part was their smiles while they ate the food made by them.
