Service Session at Fountainhead School

A 6 weeks long programme held by fountainhead school for the unprivileged children of several government schools. Children across different grades showed up with different interest and curiosity, some liked art and some liked sports. We the students of fountainhead school volunteered and were committed towards giving it back to the society. Service Session gave me a platform to know who I am as a person and what makes me a better person. My aims were to create a joyful environment for the children and to teach them so basic skills of ultimate frisbee. Ultimate frisbee is a game which has taught me values and the spirit which is to be followed on the field and off the as well.

Service session helped me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses as well. Communication and Balance are two very important aspect which I learnt. These children don’t get all the amenities and facilities as we do but whatever they do they show complete interest and commitment which is to aspire.

Learning Outcomes Achieved-

LO-2
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills. Challenges like taking up leadership, communicate in a better way and learn to share. The major challenge I faced was to convince those kids to like this game, it was a tough time but after all, all that matter were the happiness I could give to these children. Language was a barrier for me to explain certain specific term, but after 2-3 session it wasn’t a problem anymore. This taught me to find a way out however dark it is, I could see myself growing as a person. After all the sessions I felt that how lucky I am to teach someone about something that interest me and not looking to achieve anything but simply give.

LO-3
Initiate and plan a CAS experience: Planning was very crucial to create a better understanding and a better experience for the children too. We, the volunteers for teaching Ultimate Frisbee created a sheet where we planned session wise what to be done. People on the team lacked spirit and I found there wasn’t equal participation by all members. I think the first session being all fun and full of laughters set the expectations on a different level. The were circumstances and situation such a climate and the availability of the grounds which somewhere disturbed the plan we have created but doing something with limited resources and doing the best was something worth learning.

LO-4
Commitment to and perseverance: I think that I was committed towards these sessions and didn’t miss any of the sessions, I perceived that I could at least give the children the basic game sense and the 2 basic throwing technique. I think we were quite successful with what we aimed at the same time we were blessed to have such smiling face at the end of these sessions.

LO-5
Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: There were 10-12 of us who volunteered to teach Frisbee, we were a good amount of people to give individual attention to every child. The road ahead was pretty smooth as we all synergised to play our roles at the right time. Working as a team was pretty important and I think I am somewhere able to recollect this experience and be a good member on the team.

Overall it was a roller coaster experiences with ups and downs, full of learnings and happiness. Thankful to Fountainhead school to give us this platform.
