Karma Kitchen

Support staff are one of the integral part for the school to run smoothly. However their work is neither observed nor appreciated. Karma Kitchen was a platform where we as students had spent time with the support staff, by entertaining them with music and garba performances. Also cooking and serving lunch for them. This indeed was a great event as we had got the opportunity to thank the support staff for their hard work put in for the school’s operations. My role here was to help in cooking and decorating the dinning area and the assemble (where the performances would happen).

I had opted my self for the decoration part of the event. We had to decorate the dinning area and the assembly. We were around 20-25 of us in decoration, so we divided ourselves into 2 groups where one would decorate the dinning area and the other would decorate the assembly. I was given to decorate the assembly. Since my event coordinator wanted minimal and subtle decorations, that to with flowers, we were able to complete our work before time. We made a rangoli of flowers on the stairs and on the floor of the assembly. Also we had already made flowers with crepe paper, so we decided to hang them also.

After the completion of my task of decoration, I went in the kitchen to help the people in cooking as there was a lot of work to do and quite less people to do it. (We had to serve 2000-3000 support staff) Since I had never tried my hands on cooking, this was great opportunity for me to do so. My task was to make puri for them (it had to be nearest to a perfect round one). Initially I did not know how to make puris, so I observed the ones doing beside me. I understood on how they were making the puris. Then I tried doing it my self and doing it for the first time, I made quite amazing puris which were a bit close to a perfect one. Through this activity, I got to know one of my strength, which is cooking.

After the completion of my task, me and my friends were just roaming around in the school. However, out of curiosity, I wanted to know what the people in cooking are doing. So I went there to have a look and saw the people making puris. Some how I got so interested in what they were doing, so I decided to help them in making puris. Since I was committed towards the event, and to make the support staff smile, I didn’t waste my time in roaming, instead I tried to help in every area possible. Being committed had helped to make the event to turn out to be a success.

The dinning area and the assembly is huge. And decorating the whole area would take a lot of time if there would have been only 2-3 of us. But since we were a huge team of 20 people, we were able to do our job within the given time. In fact we had completed our task before the given time. We had divided our work and also worked collaboratively.

We had to serve 2000-3000 support staff, which is a huge number. And we had to make enough amount of puris for them to eat. We were 10-12 of us who were constantly making the puris in order to make it fast and in the given time. If we weren’t 10-12 of us to do the task, I am sure we would never have completed the task. Being in a team motivated us and made the task enjoying for us to do.

Over all this was a great event and a new experience for me as I got to try a new thing which I had never done before. The support staff were really overwhelmed by us and the event. It did make them feel appreciated for the work they do for the school. I got an opportunity to thank and interact with them.
