Model United Nations

I participated in two MUN’s (Model United Nations) which is a platform to delegate a country’s role in different UN committees on various issues. This is a platform wherein a person gets a chance to debate on current issues and agendas of the UN committees like UNHC, UNSC, UNESCO, AD-HOC, etc.
I took part in two MUN’s wherein my first experience was in Lok Sabha, not an official UN committee, wherein I played the role of India’s home minister ‘Rajnath Singh’ and in this very first MUN of mine, I was able to get a verbal mention in it. My second MUN was in the committee UNSC where I played the role of country of ‘Pakistan’ again in which I got a verbal mention even in a failed committee results.

Learning Outcomes achieved –
LO 1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth
According to me, knowing our strengths and weaknesses is very crucial as our strengths help us identify ourselves whereas, on the other hand, the weaknesses hold us back in different areas where we have a capability to work upon. By knowing our strengths and weaknesses we can know where we stand and work upon the area we lag in. By attending these MUNs i found out that i had a great strength of communication skills where I was able to put up my points strongly in the committee whereas, on the other hand, I found that I somewhere lagged in maintaining hostile relations with other delegates in the committee which if present would have made it impossible to gain one of the highest position in the committee. From this experience, really helped me work on my weakness and showed the development in the further committees.
LO 2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
For me, as it was my first time, to open up on the open floor to debate was really challenging which, at the first moment, caused a lot of hesitation but, with the backup support of my communication skills and other knowledge ideas, I was successful in putting up my points in the committee. According to me, undertaking such challenges is very important as these challenges help us shape ourselves as a responsible human being and they always come with an opportunity to learn something new and to build up our personality in person. I mainly developed further on my interacting and hostile skills which gave me a lot of support in other fields and activities as well. At last, learning new skills help us become multitasking and help us stand out in a crowd and also help us not getting down in any form or type of work.
LO 6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The issues that mainly the committees focused were of global significance in which the knowledge about those topics was the must and these further helps us increase our areas of interest and indirectly makes us part of such issues either as the participants or as critics. Studying about global issues makes us feel much more knowledgeable and enables us to share such info further to other people and the admirers.
Final Take Away –
Learner profile characteristics that I developed were -:
– Knowledgeable: As I possessed a lot of information about global issues and was able to interpret them properly.
– Open-minded: As I looked upon the issues with different perspectives including all the possible problems and advantages on different sides.
– Communicator: As the knowledge possessed by me needed to be put up in front of the committee here, is where the communication skills played a major role in making it successful.
The main highlight of this activity was the recognition that I gained due to my qualities and a certain level of achievement through a verbal mention in the first MUN. Munning was altogether a great as well as a fun activity in which it leads to personal growth to a great extent and was definitely a success. In future, I will definitely be attending such MUNs and would be getting open to topics running globally.
