Service Sessions – Dance

As a part of community service, Fountainhead school held service sessions, where we had to teach various new skills to underprivileged children. I immediately decided to volunteer for dance, as I love dancing and this was an opportunity for me to teach it to someone who doesn’t have access to such faculty. We were a group of 10-15 volunteers and we choreographed and taught the children over a period of 6 weeks with 2-hour sessions every Saturday. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching them as they were all really enthusiastic and eager to learn. I was also very proud of myself for being able to share my knowledge and skills for dance to those children.

Learning Outcomes achieved:

L2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills

The volunteers were also of different age categories, so we had to try and work together to decide on the songs and choreograph the steps of the dance. As each one of us had a different skill set, it was more difficult to come to a common decision, which taught me how we had to be a good communicator to work well with each other and make quicker decisions. This was my first time teaching someone else, so it was a new experience as I learnt how to manage others and manage myself in front of others.

L3- Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I was a part of doing the choreography of the dance, so we decided upon songs at the beginning of each session and then decided upon the dance moves accordingly.

L5-. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

We were 10-15 volunteers of different ages, so I had to learn how to communicate well with my peers to convey my idea, as well as to listen to theirs. This helped a lot in running the sessions smoothly. I was able to teach a few of my skills to them, and in turn I also got to learn a lot of things from them.
