Fountainhead school invited other government school’s children in our school each Saturday for continuous 8 Saturdays to let them learn something from us. They were aged from between 8 years – 15 years. We had to choose an activity which was to be taught to the government children.
L2: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
All the students who were to be taught were unprivileged and from a government school. It was very fun to teach them, but there were moments when they did not listen to us and did whatever they wanted to do, sometimes this got frustrating but I did not give up and continued to do my work. We all had to be nice and kind even if they did not respect us. Many of the children took time to learn the throws like backhand and forehand, in which I was able to spot their mistakes and show them their steps to learn the throws. This helped me to plan the steps of teaching them the throws. Patience is also something I learned out of this because the children took a lot of time to learn the basic throws.
L3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
I had chosen the sport frisbee to teach the children. When I went for the first session to teach the children, I had no plan about how to teach them. Hence this took time to plan during the session, kids had to wait until we planned of what to do further in session. This leads my partners and me to plan for the sessions. So before the bus came to pick us up, my friends and I used to meet for 20 mins and listed the things to teach the children. This helped us to let us teach more to children without wasting any time.
L4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
The sessions were every Saturday for several consecutive Saturdays. It was compulsory to attend six of them but I attended 5 of them. It was super fun. Every Saturday there were different people from different schools and seeing them happy while playing made me smile. 6 Saturdays spending in school for 4 hours in heavy sunlight is a lot of work. Saturday is the day when the school is off, so usually, I study at whatever time I wanted to but because of the service sessions I had to manage my time to show my commitment towards it.
The volunteers (fountainhead students) even had to show commitment towards the planning of the sessions. All of these things gave me a new and adulthood experience.
L5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working in a team always helps one the most. Having a team is very supportive. If I wouldn’t this team while the sessions, there could have been chances where my mind would probably blow off. The team was the one which helped me to plan for the sessions. As there were a lot of kids, they had many questions about the sport frisbee, over here having a team allowed us having more members which helped clear kids doubts quickly. There were some instance when I went to the washroom or to drink water, at this point someone else would come to my place for the kids. This made the work very easy and smooth.
A team can have few fights but at the end, everybody knows a team is very supportive, helpful and together we can do so much.
