CAS Project – Organizing Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

I play a sport called Ultimate Frisbee, which is a growing sport in India. It is a non-contact team sport played with 7 players on line (each side). India has been playing ultimate since more than a decade and this year there is a National Championship Tournament because most of the players from all over India are not able to attend the tournament because of distance and money issues, so this championship is played in different regions in India so that it becomes nearer for the people to attend the tournament. I’m a part of the north-west region, where I organized second north-west sectionals. My friend and I had organized the tournament. We started our work a month before the tournament as we need to share the details with players interested in.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

I realized that I was able to communicate with players confidently which helped me convey the information in a better way to players and on the other hand, I realized that I was lagging behind to keep track of the player fees and team fees. My partner Swayam helped me in managing the money. Now after knowing my strengths and weaknesses, I can improve while I organize an event like this. It is equally important to know our strengths and weaknesses as it helps us to identify where we are and where we lack.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

There were few teams that had money issues because of which they paid less. Also, there were two teams that did not show up and because of it, we needed to change the entire game schedule. It was moreover challenging because I had done it for the first time and I did not know few vital things like planning the budget of the tournament, so other people who have experience in organizing tournaments assisted me. At first, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to face the challenge but then I committed to it and with some assistance, I completed the challenge. Taking new challenges is not only important for me but it is for everyone as taking new challenges is a part of growing and developing as a person. I also realized I had improved upon decision-making skills throughout planning the tournament. This skill can help me make important decisions in my life and help me plan my career. It makes me feel happy as I am growing more in a person and got a clear understanding which may hold me back.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

Firstly I started with the important tasks like delivering the tournament dates and basic information with the interested players, After that, we had a meeting with the head of the school to whom we discussed the budget and other important information. Later when we were clear what we had to do, I and Swayam divided out tasks equally so everything could be done beforehand. Everything became easier as the tasks were divided and we helped each other where we lacked behind.

I am an organized person as I try to complete my tasks before it’s a deadline and I think it is equally important for everyone to be organized as it increases efficiency, gives right direction and also helps to achieve the objectives. According to me, the harder part was planning rather than initiating as I and my partner had to plan and manage all the things. Initiating this activity was not a difficult task because of the effective cooperation and communication between my partner and the staff.

As I am an introvert this activity helped me improve my social skills as there was a lot of communication needed which build up my confidence in interacting with others. I think that planning and initiating would be a lot easier in the future as I now know what I need to do.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

This CAS plan required a lot of dedication towards it as we needed to plan everything out along with our studies and a tight schedule. It became a little frustrating at the end because I was unable to manage the work but still somehow with commitment and dedication I completed the task.

It is easy for me to commit to things most of the time and also, on the other hand, I also get frustrated because of loads of work as it is hard to manage both of the things at the same point of time. But I realized showing commitment is the dedication to a particular thing and the willingness to complete that thing.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

For me working with others is easy as I am a good communicator and I also can put forward my ideas/points in a better way. It was easy for me to work with the person I know and whom I can trust. It is important to work collaboratively with others so that there can be an atmosphere of trust between group members and everyone can put forward their ideas without any hesitation. The importance of teamwork in our activity was that we had different roles to be followed out and by collaborating and understanding each other we helped each other where we lacked.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

As this was our CAS Project, and players attending the tournament had less money, we provided slabs of 200/400 with actual fees 800 which was clearly less than what the per person cost was and also this led to less profit or no profit at all. We could have charged 800 to all the players but our ethics made us provide slabs. This directly affected us because we (Fountainhead School Event Team) had so much pressure financially that it took weeks for us to decide whether to provide slabs or not on the first place.
