Service Sessions

Service Sessions

Our school invited some government schools to Fountainhead School for 6 Saturdays starting from 14/07/2018 to 18/08/2018. The main aim was to give those unprivileged children an exposure to the extracurricular activities such as dancing, art and craft, cooking, frisbee, football, basketball, etc.  This was an opportunity for them to learn and develop new skills in different fields which they opted for. I chose to teach them Football because I have always been ardent towards football, I have been playing football since I was a kid therefore I possess all the skills required.

Learning outcomes achieved :-

LO2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
There were two main challenges I faced:-

  1. Service sessions were for all grades from 7 to 12. Apart from a few people all of them were people I have never talked to. I am an introvert which caused me troublesome in talking to those people I haven’t talked to. Also, I open up with only a few people. I did not talk much in the first session but after the session I realized that if I did not converse it is being a loss for those students instead wasting mine and their time both. So, keeping my shyness and comfort zone aside, I conversed and coordinated with them to make the session worth.
  2. There were too many students to handle. There were times when they started doing what they wanted not because the session was boring but because it was too tiring for them. There were many times when it became extremely chaotic and there were a few people who started fighting in between the game. That was the time when we played some tactics, before making them play a match, while making them do the drills and warm up we divided them into groups and then taught them, this definitely consumed less time and was also fun. Otherwise, I generally used to get brainwashed till the end of the session.
  3. Being an IB student, it is tough to devote time on a holiday with all this stress. So I had possessed self management and time management skills. However, it still was a task for me. I did not attend these sessions for only CAS requirements but also for personal interest.

LO1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth

These sessions have been extremely fun. With this academic strain, having to play and have some fun, however, as mentioned above it was a chaos so I used to get brainwashed but we had to be kind to them. In addition, I am generally short tempered so this chaotic environment increased my forbearance.

LO4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

I attended all the sessions only because teaching those children gave me contentment. I committed them to be present there in every session.  As mentioned in learning outcome 2, despite so much of work pressure, I specially took out time for these sessions only and only because of my commitment. Also, prior to these sessions, we used to decide which set of drills to teach them, which reflected our perseverance.

LO5 – Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

Despite the fact that I am an introvert, I managed to present all my skills for a perfect teamwork. Moreover, we divided ourselves and the work always with a win-win situation. I did create a bond with other colleagues. Definitely I would award our coordination for these productive sessions.
