Global Oydssey
For this activity, the eleventh grade was divided into groups, and each group was allowed to simulate a stall-based business that corresponds to the curriculum of the group three subjects. These stalls included activities such as food distribution and managing the turnover/financial calculations (back-end activities).
Date: 14th of February 2019
My participation description: I was assigned the tasks of creating leaflets for the event as well as being one of the hosts and versatile contributors to the event. In the leaflet, I attempted to give it an aesthetically appealing design with the help of my teammates as well as put all the necessary information that would result in a good number of visitors for the event.
Learning outcomes:
LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth (as I observed myself as an acceptable time manager because I managed to complete all the tasks assigned to me on time. After that observation, I felt a strong need to maintain that quality for my betterment. Additionally, I found that I had to develop clarity in my speech in terms of audibility as well as develop a warm and welcoming phraseology as it is a necessity for a host of an event. Identifying my strengths and weaknesses easily ).
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process (the challenging part for me was the hosting of the event because I could not attract a good number of visitors for the event as I did not develop that skill/ability. This is because I did not have experience in hosting an event).
LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience (To organize myself, I requested my teammates to allow me to finish my tasks in a one-by-one manner because I usually like to organize myself in a similar mode. Therefore, first, I finished designing the leaflet and then focused on hosting speech and presentation. This allowed me to put complete attention on both of my tasks. Initiating was the most difficult part of the event because the plan consisted of many aims, but due to minor resistances, those became difficult to achieve. Although planning may not always cater to initiating a project, it is important for an individual or a group to have a plan/flow of their event as it unambiguously projects the flow of the event which helps in ensuring the success of it).
LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences (all the academic aims appeared as resistances when I tried to showcase a strong commitment to the event and in completing my tasks because both seemed to be equally important because academics are the backbone of school education and activities like these cater to making a full-fledged
backbone. Additionally, it involved teamwork which resulted in time investment of other students along with me which reminded us to make it worthy of our time investment. In the beginning, it made me overwhelmed but as I managed my time, it got better than the initial stage. It is difficult to showcase commitment and perseverance to an event like this because they are not a part of the regular school schedule of students which results into the students attempting to adapt to the time restrictions which usually takes a good amount of time! But commitment, perseverance, and adaptation are the success elements).
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively (as I am one of the latest students to enroll in this school, it is slightly tricky for me to work collaboratively with my classmates because of the lack of a complete emotional bonding. Otherwise, I manage to work quite well in group work. During Global Odyssey, it was not as difficult as I described earlier because I had already made a good connection with my teammates and required a little more coordination, but there was no one to create dashed resistance. It is very important to work collaboratively because of the fact that one task was not to be completed in individuality as it was directly connected to another task which was done by another teammate (for example, designing leaflets as one task which is connected to the distribution of leaflets, which is also an individual task). As a whole, being ready with complete items when required was done in collaboration of teammates with each other).
LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance (as we earned profit from this activity by selling different items to other students and teachers, we donated 10% of the profit to the Missing non-profit organization. Founded by Leena Kejriwal in 2015, MISSING is an open mindfulness crusade which expects to sharpen individuals to the situation of a great many young girls who are dealt for sexual abuse. MISSING is a four-section open mindfulness crusade.)
LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions (the ethical issues that we faced were the wastage of school resources along with cleanliness, as when stalls where placed, lots of food items were littered on the ground which was partially left untidy. These were ethical issues because they directly or indirectly meant the wastage of money, and wasting money is not a moral choice. These issues were indirectly connected to us because the resources are usually bought from our financial contribution as school fees to the school. These issues directly negatively triggered us as indirectly; we wasted our money ourselves. My opinion on these issues was that significant attention was required on this wastage of resources and untidiness to allow ourselves with the protection from any indirect or direct harm. As described earlier, after this activity, my opinion on these issues has not changed).
Final take away:
Caring: as participants worked as different teams to complete their primary tasks.
Communicators: as we worked in collaboration with our teammates by conversing with them to fulfill our needs as well as their needs for this activity to complete.
This activity was directly connected to all the group 3 IB subjects (Business Management, ITGS, Psychology, and many more). To uncover how these subjects were related to this activity, Business Management, ITGS, and Psychology as subjects in this activity will be discussed. Business Management was used by stall owners who used marketing strategies to attract customers. ITGS was used by designing team as different technology items were used to design leaflets for invitations. Psychology was used by the hosting team as they tried to engage the visitors in the event through different techniques.
At a personal level, a highlight for me in this event was the fact that I was able to work with many people with whom I did not have a great connection with, therefore, this activity gave me a chance to work with them and understand them as individuals as well as great team workers.
My perspective about working individually for all activities has changed because of the pleasant experience that I had with my team members and additionally because I learned the aforementioned fact about working as a team.
We achieved success because the turnover from this activity appeared as a profit for our grade which made us feel satisfied in terms of the hard work that we put in this activity as well as about the fact our learnings from IB subjects were fruitful.
If I wanted to change a few aspects of these activities, I would have definitely focused on the issues mentioned earlier to avoid any financial or ethical status harm.
When I enter the real world, I will try to make connections with people to allow enjoyable and efficient teamwork in my job of interest.
As a grade, we planned to donate parts or even the whole profit amount to Missing NPO.
