AS (Art Special)

It is a subject which is offered by our school where in the students can choose what art they want to do and work on it and develop skills during the academic year. Music, Drama, Dance, Visual arts, Photography and a few more subjects are offered to the students and I have chosen Visual Arts (VA) as my subject. I chose it because I’ve always wanted to do something creative and express myself through visual art. I’ve loved dance and I have always chosen dance as my AS but this year I decided to try something I hadn’t done in school under guidance and actually learn something new in the process. L1.Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth I realised I am good at expressing myself through abstract art, or I also like to create artworks that have a meaning or a purpose behind them. Based on that, I developed the idea of doing ‘Fluid Art’ and took inspiration from Instagram. I tried it on paper first and then went ahead with it on canvas. I like working with paints, however, i just don’t like painting in the conventional manner. It’s not that I don’t like it because I am bad at it, but i just feel like I am restricted in expressing my thoughts and making my own strokes when I am painting in the conventional manner. I personally think that this is a strength of mine and not a weakness since this feature of mine helps me express my thoughts through art and also helps convey pressing issues to the audience which even I think are important but in my own way. Art gives me satisfaction, and if what I’ve made in the end doesn’t satisfy me, then it’s no point. L2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills As mentioned before, I worked on canvas for this project of mine. The challenge I faced was that the canvas board wasn’t already made. I had to cut the canvas sheet of the needed side, fold it according to the board and staple it on the base. My artwork required 6 canvas boards therefore, I had to repeat the extensive process of making my boards 6 times. This entire process took me more than a month because this subject only came once a week and it wasn’t possible for me to finish a canvas in 40 minutes. L4. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience As mentioned earlier, I made my own canvas’ from scratch and they were taking a lot of time to be made. I had six of them to make for six different shades of colours. With the help of my sir, I learnt how to staple them and fold them and continued to make the canvas boards with determination. This activity was a process for me to develop my skills and also develop my thinking in terms of visual art. I have been attending these classes for almost a year now and I have been exploring new thing along the way, for example: mixing various medias and developing ideas from personal experiences I have had. I was determined to continue exploration in this subject and I finished the fluid art piece I started which had a purpose.
