Global Odyssey

GLOBAL ODYSSEY

Global Odyssey was an event organised by students in collaboration with the teachers. The event was about executing our knowledge from all our Group 3 subjects (Humanities). Different groups were allocated different stalls like Entertainment, Food, Games and Fashion. There was also a management group which included the resource managers, event in charge and the hosts. I was one of the hosts. It was my responsibility to take our guests through the event and make sure they understand the significance of this Group 3 event; Global Odyssey.

LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
Since the hosts were also a part of the management team, we had to plan out the entire event. The entire management team had several meetings to decide the venue of the event. We also decided how we wanted the layout of the event to be. The decoration was decided and the decoration team was given out work accordingly. Every stall had to decided their individual products and the prices respectively, the hosts made sure that they got sufficient reminders to finish their tasks on time. As a host, me and my other team members had to note down the main points we would deliver to the guests as created a basic script that we had to follow when talking to each guest. We could not prioritise our time properly which is why we had to edit the first draft on the day of the event. The changes were made by two of our team members and the other two went around the site making sure everything else was going according to the plan. We delegated work in order to finish it in the time we had left.

The entire marketing strategy was planned by us. It was a very innovative technique wherein we barged into different corridors during their break times with the event date leaving our target audience into thinking about what was coming up. Everyone started talking about the ‘upcoming event’ and it totally worked. This guerilla marketing strategy would definitely be used in the future for different events; especially next year’s Global Odyssey. Then, it would become a pattern and an identity for the event.

LO6: Engagement with issues of global significance

10 percent of all the funds generated from all the stalls were going to a foundation called ‘Missing Girls’. It is a foundation that helps save girls from being trafficked. Human trafficking is an issue which I take personally as anyone could be abducted, sold of to another country and be used as a prostitute. It could be anyone I know. It is important for us to know how to be aware of our surroundings and take preventive measures accordingly. The organisation we donated the money to also spreads awareness about how to stay cautious about our environment and informs people about the severity of this issue.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

We had different time slots for different grades. It was getting too crowded at some of the time slots and people were not forming queues. The lawn area was getting unorganised because there were a lot of people. There were only 4 hosts and a lot of groups to manage. Some of us did lose our temper while managing the students however, it was an event we had organised and using anger to solve problems would only heat things up. Which is why we calmed ourselves down and made sure we explain people about this event and navigate them through the event patiently and in a way they would understand. Because there were so many people, it was also difficult for the stalls to bill whatever they sold and we kept motivating our friends at the stalls to budget everything so that whatever money is gained or lost is in the record and the best could go to the missing girls organisation.

It was an amazing event and everyone had a lot of fun. All the organisers, the teachers and all the guests also enjoyed. Time management is definitely something I will keep in mind next time and all the groups did exceptional work starting from the decoration team to the stalls to the hosts and even all the teachers who helped us all out.
