Bal Mela

Creative Mela is an event organised by students at my school with the help of some adults where underprivileged children are invited to our school. People volunteer for this event and carry out different activities for the kids that are invited to the school. Different games, sports, a jumping jack, dance and services like tattoo and nail art are provided to them. L2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills I am not a public speaker. I was assigned to make huge groups of children dance and interact with us. It was difficult for me to talk to people and talk confidently to all of them, give them instructions and make sure they’re having a fun time. However, after a few groups passed by and visited us, it was easier for me to communicate with them through dancing and cracking fun jokes together. I feel that this event and this particular challenge helped me become more confident and also I was able to manage the students even after being overwhelmed by the number of them in the starting. L3. Initiate and plan a CAS experience The songs that we were going to dance on had to decided prior to the event. We came up with a list of songs that were peppy and and very famous since the children that came for the Bal Mela would be knowing only restricted number of songs and they wouldn’t enjoy dancing on songs they couldn’t sing to. Me and my partner also decided steps to dance on so they we wouldn’t waste time when they came to us. We choreographed a few blocks and not entire dances so that we could use them in multiple songs and, however and whenever we wanted them. It was helpful that I had my friends with me because more number of people meant more number of blocks. And when someone would forget or get tired, the others would take up. L5. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively I wasn’t the only one assigned to the live stage. There were 3 more people with me and I personally think it was great that I wasn’t the only one because there were times when I would run out of blocks or someone else would and that was when the others could step in and continue. It was a 3 and a half hour event and it was not possible for any one of us to dance continuously. Having members in the team helped all of us switch places whenever we got tired and keep up with the show!
L7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions Underprivileged kids were invited to the event and it was my responsibility to make sure that they feel equal to us and are equally involved in the event as we are. Me with my other teammates actually made a plan beforehand and put efforts into this event. We could have just done it for the sake of doing it and we could have just made the children dance and go. However, we tried our best to involve the entire crowd and interact with all. To end this I would say that this event helped me boost my confidence to talk to people and made a better person from within.
