VOLUNTEERING AT TOURNAMENTS

I helped my classmates organise 3 tournaments: 2 football tournaments and a box cricket. All of these tournaments were organised on turf grounds in surat, wherein more than 15 teams participated. The box cricket was a ‘5 VS 5 cricket tournament’ for two days. One of the football tournaments was a non-profit event where the profits were donated to an NGO. For both of these tournaments, I was responsible to coordinate with the teams, make sure they were on time for their matches and clicking pictures. While for the third tournament, I was responsible for getting the resources ready for the matches and maintaining the scoreboard.

Learning outcomes achieved:

L1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

Through volunteering at these tournaments I was able to identify my strengths and weaknesses. I was good at coordinating and communicating with people as it was easy for me to communicate with all the teams and notify them of their matches and constantly be in touch with them about the match schedules. This helped run things smoothly and on time for the entire event. My weakness could be that I was easily losing focus. Since I am not that into sports, it got a little boring for me to watch all the matches and note down the scores. I could have been more focused in all my tasks. This could even help me in my day to day life where I can improve and be more focused on the task that I am doing and not get distracted very easily.

L2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills.

I had to photograph the event as well. I have always loved photography but it was a challenge for me to click pictures of people in motion since they were all playing football. These tournaments helped me develop photography skills as, surprisingly, I was able to click wonderful pictures of everyone playing. Although learning, this took a lot of time and hundreds of pictures but I was able to manage with the help of a few of my colleagues who were good in photography.

L5. Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively.

Apart from the organisers, we were a team of 5-6 people. We had divided our work to make it easier for all of us. Working together has benefits as we were all freely communicating with each other and working together so that the event runs smoothly. Teamwork is always a must. We had divided our responsibilities by dividing the teams and being in contact with them. By doing so, it was easier to manage the teams and bring them on time.

L7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

We had planned to remain ethical at all times. We made sure that we weren’t biased to any of the teams and we gave them equal opportunities. We even made sure that they get a fair chance of winning against the opposite team.

Overall, volunteering was a good experience as it helped develop my management and organisational skills. We could see that all the players were satisfied and happy as well as they maintained their team spirit at all times. It was a fun event.
