Grade 11 students were given the opportunity to organize a memorable farewell for grade 12 students. As soon as I heard of this, I was excited and keen on giving them the perfect farewell! I decided to challenge myself and enrolled in the dance committee.
Learning outcomes that were achieved in this long-term activity were:
LO 1: Identify your own strength and develop areas of growth.
I realized that my strength lied in working with a group. I was surrounded by people who uplifted and motivated me to perform my best. The area of growth I needed to work upon was learning the dance steps so that I could perform gracefully on the day of the farewell.
LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.
I learned and enjoyed dancing more than I thought I would. As we started practicing, I realized the biggest challenge for me was learning the dance steps. I overcame this by coming to school early every day for two weeks. By the end of our practice sessions, I was through with the dance steps and felt confident. Moreover, I felt more confident in my skin.
LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.
I was working in a group which consisted of 8-9 members. A lot of times, we did not agree while making decisions about the dance steps however, we ensured that we were respectful of others’ opinion and did not make them feel inferior. At the end of it, we had grown closer and worked in a manner that brought out the best in every member of the group.
Lastly, this was a great experience and I know I wouldn’t have been able to do this without the support of my wonderful team members. This activity catered to open-minded and communicator as learner profiles. I was open-minded and took the time to consider others’ perspective and finally, include them in key decision making. I was able to communicate effectively with my team members and put up a good show as a result.
