Seva Cafe – Monsoon Musings (Service)

This event was a charity event and was organized to promote knowledge of literature amongst students, teachers, and parents. It was organized at Fountainhead School and provided students, teachers, and parents an opportunity to present their literary works in front of a crowd. For this event, I took part in the Seva Cafe in which I had to cook food and serve it to the people attending the event.

Learning Outcomes achieved:

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

  • For the event, we had come early to the school to make snacks for the people attending the event. During that time I had used my strength to cook food and also learned a few things about the rules for cooking food. For this event, my group had to make coin idli and green chutney. I knew the way to make normal idli but not coin idli. Hence, making coin idli was a strength that I had learned while preparing food. Moreover, I and my friend were assigned the task for making green chutney. Both of us knew the process to make it. However, we were not sure about the ratio of ingredients required for making it and hence we saw a video on YouTube and made it. Hence, during that time I had gained more knowledge about cooking food.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

  • Before the event I had only some knowledge about cooking food and also I also knew to make only some dishes. The main challenge for us was to make good coin idlis. We were lucky enough to get help from the support staff to make the same. While preparing the snacks with my team I learned to make new dishes and also did some activities in cooking for the first time. This was a completely new experience and I felt great after overcoming this new challenge. It is important to take up challenges in life because they help you to develop as a person and help you learn new skills. This skill would be useful in the future in case I live alone and have to make food for myself.

LO4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences

  • We had started planning for the event 10-15 days prior to the event. We had decided the snacks we were going to make, the way we will be greeting the people attending the event and the most important part which was decoration. We had decorated the venue and also had practiced the way in which we would greet the people. However, we had decided to serve the people fresh food and for that, we had come early to school which was a commitment in itself. Coming early had also helped us in doing the last-minute preparations in which I and my team had decorated the stalls.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

  • For preparing the food we had divided ourselves into groups and with the help and coordination from the support staff, we were able to prepare delicious food before time as well as efficiently. This helped me to learn the importance of team building which would help complete the assigned task properly, with maximum productivity and less time. Also, as the work was divided nobody felt the burden of cooking 5 dishes. usually working with a team is not a problem for me because personally, I believe that working with a team provides you with more skills and qualities.

Overall, the monsoon musings event was a big success. Teachers, parents and the students’ everyone enjoyed a lot. It created an impeccable platform for literary works. The Seva Cafe team as well did their job perfectly and the people attending the event loved the food and had a great time. In the end, the coordinators and the respected teachers appreciated every one of us by giving us a green flag.
