KARMA KITCHEN (CAS project)

The concept of Karma Kitchen comes from Berkely, the restaurant was first opened in 2007 by volunteers who wanted to see the “gift economy”. The concept is that the volunteers cook and serve food with love and offer it as a gift. The guests contribute in the spirit of “paying it forward” and the circle keeps going.  My project was inspired by the same idea the only difference is that the guests were my school support staff members. I organized an event in my school wherein I gathered volunteers through sending out a form to the students and teachers in the school. The event had two parts, first where an assembly for the guest was organized, the volunteers performed for the staff and then the staff was encouraged to showcase their talent and we all played Garba after that. The second part was serving the staff the food that the volunteers made and we distributed appreciation card after that.
LO 1: I am fond of people and I like doing event work as working with people is what I look forward to but I am extra particular about details and deadlines hence it becomes difficult to work in a team. It is my weakness that I have a high temper if in case things become haphazard I lose my calm. This project helped me challenge my weak point as I worked with a big group of more than 20 people and the age group varied drastically. There were instances on the day of the event where things went off track, there was a little laziness from the volunteers but I handled it well. LO 2: As I described my weakness in the above point I would want to say the project has helped me develop skills on how to handle people without being angry, it will be easy for me to lead in any sphere of life. The challenging part was how will I handle the volunteers and coordinate with the school staff during the event. I learned that having a checklist of while the event and a pre-instructed team of people help execute the plan properly. FOr any work checklists are the most helpful tool, hence the skill of having a checklist read and being clear with what the plan will be something that I follow in the future as well. LO 3: Planning and well as initiating are both difficult tasks to perform. Each stage has its own challenges. The process of planning was based on assumptions while the number of volunteers was being listed and a list of resources was made. It was important for me to be as accurate as possible while drafting my finance plan. I took the help of the school admin staff and my supervisor for details of a similar event that had happened a few years back in order to have a clear idea about how will I plan my work. Talking about initiation it was difficult as I was a little nervous about my temper and how will the team pull it off, the plan has to be detailed so that the initiation becomes flawless. I would want to say the planning process helps execute the event to its most potential as if the stages are clear and the deadlines of the plan are met it reduces the anxiety of how will the project be. LO 4: It was a solo project and hence it required more time, attention and work to be done as everything was managed single-handedly. The project required a commitment level to be the maximum. I had to set personal deadlines first, second and then the hard ones for my tasks. There was a lot of running around as different school staff handles different aspects of an event and everyone has their own schedule so for my work to be done I had to squeeze into their timetable and report whenever it was required. A lot of different work had to be done at one time for example if I was working on the menu simultaneously I was also coordinating with the decoration. There was a lot fo juggling of work and duties was required and hence I had to be committed to the entire process of one month. LO 5: It is generally difficult for me to work with others. As I am short temper and I mentioned it in my weakness. Even though it is difficult for the event especially it was required out of me that I will be more flexible than usual if I wanted to execute my idea and spread happiness with a huge number of people. Without the volunteers and the school admin staff, the event wouldn’t have happened as the whole idea was dependent on volunteering and group work. Collaboration provides an individual with an opportunity to think beyond the horizon as the individual’s idea expands when new people give their inputs. This is exactly what happened during the planing of the project, having more members in the team with different field of interest and expertise helped me work on the detailing of all the aspects from cooking, to decoration to entertainment and planning. Without collaboration, the detailing would not have been so well and the event would have been dull. Teamwork made my project more achievable and the event more lively.
