Bal Mela

For this event we invited underprivileged children from all walks of life and community to celebrate and enjoy different sports, arts, and games along with kids from our school. This was an opportunity for us to share our space and resource with these children to enjoy the joys of childhood. This was a great platform to spread joy amongst the kids. I, along with 2 other girls volunteered to teach Origami to these underprivileged kids.

L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

L4 – Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

L6 – Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance

I used to do a lot of Origami when I was younger but had forgotten all of it because of not doing it for a couple of years in between. I had forgotten everything so I jumped up at this opportunity of being able to do it again. I am a quick learner which helped me learn the skills almost instantly. Not only did I want to learn Origami but I also wanted to share the learnt knowledge with others.

I believe that I was a very patient teacher and did a very good job of teaching the kids. However, I thought that teaching them a little difficult origami would be challenging and fun for them but it turned out to be the exact opposite. Some kids got confused or bored because they couldn’t get it right and started losing interest. I then realized that simply making paper planes is making them excited and happy. There were still some kids who actually wanted to learn the tough origami. We ended up splitting up and teaching the kids what they wanted to learn and not what we had planned to teach them because apart from learning, I also wanted them to have fun.

As I was the eldest in the group, I took up the leadership position and coordinated well with my teammates in deciding what we would teach or how we would go about with the activities. We had a lot of submissions and events around Bal Mela, but this was something I really wanted to do so I dedicatedly spent some time preparing for it.

Poverty and lack of proper education is a global issue that prevents an individual to enjoy life the same way as others. Most of us are privileged and are not aware of how others suffer. This event was an opportunity for us to give back to them, which were able to do for them free of charge. Looking at the smiles on the children’s faces made my day and all the efforts that I put in worth it. Overall it was a wonderful experience and I look forward to taking up such projects in the future.
