PS – Frisbee

Our school offers a number of sports for students to find a sport which perfectly suits them and help them excel in it. I chose Frisbee as my sport preference at the school, I really enjoyed playing Frisbee and I also found out that I was pretty good at it. Earlier, my sport preference was athletics and I was also good at it. After a point of time, I started growing bored with a single person sport, I wanted to play something that required communication, team building and synergizing. Frisbee was a relatively new sport to me so I thought giving it a try, as I started playing it I realised that I was better than average players so I made a team called “Game Changers” and started attending the tournaments like SUO and U-17 under my  captaincy and Regionals and Nationals from a team called minions.

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth

As I was in Athletics earlier, I realised that I had already developed endurance and stamina needed for the sport. I was also able to learn to catch and throw quite well. The only problems were that I was only able to throw from my left side, and when the defender comes I always get under pressure and do a mistake.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process

As I am lefty I was able to throw forehand from my left side and for backhand, I used the right hand. Somehow, I was not comfortable throwing Backhand from my left hand and Forehand from my right hand. I realised that could be a great weakness for me in the game so I trained my left hand to throw backhand, so now I was able to throw from both sides left and right without changing the grip.

I also designed the jersey for the team myself, which turned out to be pretty and great. I handled all the process of designing it and getting it printed myself. That is how I learned and started graphic designing.

LO3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

I took tournaments very seriously, I always wanted my team to perform better than last time. Therefore, I created a training schedule for my team where we would practice specific drills and follow specific routine regularly. The practice is the key to performance, so we had to be consistent at practice. To be honest, it was quite hard to get everyone to attend the practice regularly.

LO4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences

When I initially started Game Changers, we were just a group of amateur players playing between the professional or highly skilled players in the tournaments. We definitely had no chance of winning in the silver pool or gold pool, so we always tried to do our best. Sometimes, when we did not get the scores my teammates got demotivated and I always tried to motivate them to keep trying and aim for the spirit award.

As I started designing the jersey for the first time, there were several problems which came along the way. Everything was so specific, the image had to be a high-resolution image, it had to be in a specific format and size. I was really hard for me to adapt to this all and learning how to use the software but eventually, I learn it and got comfortable with it.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively

As frisbee is a team game there are always benefits of working together as a team. Not everyone can have all the skills, If I am good at throwing then I need someone who is good at catching the discs that I throw. Working as a team gave me that advantage, I had people with different skills in my team so we can play the game smoothly.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

Frisbee is all about honesty and the spirit of the game. The game of Frisbee has no umpires or referees so if there is any cause of a foul or some other call, both teams come together and discuss the issue together and come to a common conclusion. So during any such calls during the game, I always encouraged my team to solve the matter with all of their honesty and integrity. That is what led me to win one Most spirited player of the tournament award and helped Game Changers win the Most spirited team.
