Romance With Risk and Paathshaala

Ranchos is a company created by 7 adults, who pursue their passion and dreams in various ways, one of them is by organising meaningful events. I have been a part of two events, they have organised- Romance with risk and Paathshaala.

Romance with Risk was conducted on 21st July, 2018. Dr. A. Velumani joined us to talk about his successful journey and how he managed to be the CEO of the company – Thyrocare.

While Paathshaala was a session where Gautam Khetrapal, an international speaker who has spoken at various Ted talks, was invited to Surat to talk about how current education differs from modern education.

Throughout both the event, I volunteered to sell passes and do on-day assisting works.On-day assisting work included- keeping water bottles, pen, pad and dairies and sticking seat tags on each chair (approximately more than 1500 chairs), making sure the place is clean, spraying room fresheners continuously and lastly, guiding the audiences to their seats.

Leaning outcomes achieved-

LO 1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth:

Managing events has always been my strength. I like keeping things organised and on time. This helped me throughout the event to complete my tasks on the deadlines and getting everything ready for the event on the day. An area for growth can be my communication skills. We had various meeting before the events, once or twice a week, where we all had to share our progress and a suggestion or an improvement to the people present. In a mixed age group, 7- 50 years, it is difficult for me to share my opinions. I was shy to express my ideas and hence, I feel I should have expressed it as people there were open minded and easy accepting the things said.

LO 2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process:

One of the challenges that I faced was selling passes. It was difficult for me to convince people to spend their money on this event. Since the rate of the passes were high, people thought twice before enrolling themselves. I had to call more than 100 people to sell 25 passes by explain them about the importance and learning of the event, they might acquire. Eventually, I learned to be persuasive enough to reach my aim of selling 50 passes.

LO 4:  Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences :

I committed to sell a number of passes by a given deadline. It was quite difficult for me to achieve it at the beginning, but once I was motivated enough and well- energized, I dedicated myself to complete the task within a week. Pushing me out of my comfort zone, make me work hard and achieve my aim.

LO 5:  Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively :

We were a team of more than 50 people, from different age groups. There were people which much experience who guided us along the way. I learned a few techniques and skills from them. One of this included how to market the event and handle yourselves during a crises. They shared their past and current experiences. It was quite beneficial as it made me realise how difficult it is to carry out an entire event, but can be made easy with the help of others.

LO 7:  Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions :

While greeting the audience and guiding them to their seats, we had to use a formal language and keep a smile on our face. By doing this, we were showing a good attitude toward the event and acknowledging the presence of the guests. It was our responsibility to make sure we use the appropriate words and language.

During the preparations of the event, we collected a lot of plastic waste. Instead of throwing it in the dustbin or elsewhere, we recycled some part of it and the rest was properly disposed, so that it does not harm the environment.

We even had a completion meeting where we were personally acknowledged on the hard work we did and our help in making the event a success.Overall, this event made me learn new skills and develop myself in various ways. Though, there were a few challenges but with the help of others, it became an easy task. I feel grateful to have volunteered in this journey.
