Service Sessions at school

Our school invited a few government schools to our school. The aim was to provide the opportunities and the resources these underprivileged children would not get otherwise. So, these children came to our school for every Saturdays for 6 consecutive Saturdays and we had to provide them service (teach). We had an option of what we wanted to teach so that we give in our best efforts.

Learning outcomes achieved:

L2: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
All of the children we were teaching were all underprivileged children. I was very happy to work with them and teach them. However, it took a lot of effort. A lot of the times the kids would not listen and would do what they want to. This helped me increase my tolerance. Me and my colleagues had to be kind and nice and still be able to conduct the session. Most of the children were also taking a lot of time to learn the steps and we had to move ahead because of the time constraint. So, planning steps they would be able to do and teaching them in a way they would be able to understand quickly really increased my patience.

L3: Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
We had to choose what we wanted to teach. Anything ahead of that had to be done by us. The teaching plan, class schedule, choreography, the ice-breaking activity. So, before every Saturday, me and my friends got together to decide what song we wanted to teach and spent some time creating dance blocks which we would later include in those songs. We spent the first five minutes of the first session to decide the schedule and how we wanted to go about with the warm up and the dance.
We had not planned the dance before the very first session and it wasted about 15 minutes of the session. Some of us had to entertain the students while some of us were planning and choreographing the dance in the backstage simultaneously. It got hectic. So, we decided to be ready with the planning before each class and that was working out well for us.

L4: Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
As mentioned earlier, the service sessions took place for 6 Saturdays which is almost 2 months. These sessions were extra and we had to specially go to school on all of these Saturdays to provide service to all the children. This in itself was a commitment as it was not one session, but six session. A person can not back out in the middle of the service sessions as the children we were teaching would suffer. It happened that I had a lot of  academic work this one weekend however, I had to manage my time and and still attend the session in the weekend.
Secondly, the students were supposed to do all the planning. This required perseverance and commitment as all the volunteers would have to gather and discuss and plan prior to each session. There were limitations to what steps the children could perform but other than that, we had to give in our best for the 6 service sessions.

L5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working in a team helped me so so much! As mentioned earlier that we had not planned for the first session and it was a last minute crisis. So, the team split up into 2 parts and half was entertaining the children and half was planning. If there was not a team, I would have not been able to pull this off so nicely and make it look so effortless.
Even after we had planned the schedule for each class, we split people. 4-5 people would do the warm up with the kids and the rest would teach dance. I was leading the warm up and it was great as whenever I lost track of new steps, someone else would support me and we would continue. Same was with the dance team. When they lost track, we would step in. We definitely had a few issues regarding what steps to teach and which not, but we took a vote and went ahead with what majority thought.
A team can have a few quarrels but members of the team also help and support each other which is a huge advantage!
