Service Sessions in school ( Creativity and Service)

Our school had organized service sessions for underprivileged government school student. In the service sessions, we had to choose one curricular activity which we know properly and then teach the same to the students. These sessions were held at Fountainhead School itself, on Saturdays for 6 weeks. We had activities like frisbee, football, basketball computers, dance, arts, and cooking. For the service sessions, I had chosen frisbee as my activity because I know the sport very well and can teach the same. Moreover, I and my friends had decided to opt for frisbee because all of us know to play the game and also because we can coordinate easily with each other without having any arguments.

Learning outcomes achieved:

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth

  • As there were many students we had divided them into groups and one of us had to look after every group. I had learned a new skill in controlling the children and teaching them basic things about the sport. I felt great when all the students were carefully listening to me and do the activities I had instructed them to do. This was a new strength I had discovered during the service sessions.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

  • All the children we were working with were underprivileged and had never played a sport like Frisbee before. I was attending such service sessions for the first time and my main motive was to help the children learn something new. At some point I had also faced problems like making the children understand about the game; communicating and explaining them about the game because they were not fluent with their English speaking; handling them because they were many etc. As we were 7-8 people volunteering for teaching frisbee we had made groups of children and divided them amongst us so it would make the job easy for everyone.
  • LO3: Initiate and plan a CAS experience
I had learned frisbee before in school so I knew what all drills and activities I had to make them do in the beginning. We had made them do all the basic activities at the beginning like throwing, running, drills, etc. Moreover, it was not difficult to initiate a plan because all of us were well aware of the activities. We had got new sets of students for every session so we made them do the same activities every time.
  • LO4: Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience
For the service sessions, I had to go to school every Saturday for 6 weeks. This itself was a commitment because every Saturday I had to specially go to school for conducting the sessions. In case anyone of us misses any session, the children will be suffering and our partner would have to conduct the whole session. I had to plan my schedule every Saturday because I had to spend almost 4 hours at the service sessions.
  • LO5: Demonstrate the skills and benefits of working collaboratively
For me working in a team is always fun and here, working in a team was very important because there were many children and we had to divide them into groups and then conduct the sessions. Moreover, working in a team was required because I won’t be able to handle all the children alone. It was important to work collaboratively and coordinate with the team members in the task to conduct the sessions successfully.
  • LO7: Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
We did not teach anything wrong to the children, whether it be throws, drills or anything related to frisbee. Moreover, I was strictly instructed not to play among my friends, devote all my attention to the children, help them whenever they have a problem or wanted something and mainly not to make any one of them feel inferior. I respected the instructions and was with the children all the time and was very kind to all of them.

With this activity, we were able to help the underprivileged children learn a new sport. We had planned the sessions quite well because of dividing ourselves into groups and then conducting the sessions. These service sessions were surely a success because we were able to see the joy and happiness of learning frisbee on the faces of the children after each session. Moreover, I was happy after conducting these service sessions because I was able to contribute positively towards society and help children learn something new.
