Learning how to play drums
Music has been an area which has been very much unexplored by me. Although I had taken up keyboard as my AS for 2 years in school, I didn’t learn something significant. Hence, I decided to take up the challenge of learning drums at my home through online tutorials. My dad regularly practices drum beats at home on his drumset, I decided to take some help from him too.
The strand covered through this task is “creativity”.
The learning outcomes covered in this activity are-
LO1-Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
When it comes to music, I have no significant strengths. The only strength I was able to identify was good listening skills. I was able to properly listen and follow the instructions from my dad or the online tutor. However, when it comes to weaknesses, my major weakness was a lack of patience. Music requires a lot of patience. No amateur can learn any drum beats within some minutes. It requires him/her to patient practice it for some hours or even some days at times. It was very much necessary for me to identify my weaknesses through this activity. Now, I can work on my impatient nature. This will help me in the future to learn any instrument better and faster, including drums.
LO2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
For me learning anything related to music was itself the biggest challenge. Although I am into the habit of listening to music on regular basis and I have learned how to play keyboard in the past, learning how to play drums was far more difficult than my expectations. It required a lot of patience and a lot of time. Often, I became quite frustrated as I wasn’t able to properly play the beats. However, my dad came to my rescue and explained to me how important patience and perseverance as in learning anything new or out of your comfort zone. With time, I was able to grasp things and I was able to learn new beats with minimal support. Now, after 1 year of learning how to play drums, I feel quite satisfied that I was able to take up and complete this challenge. I can now also realize how important it is for one to set up out of their comfort zone because only then they can foster holistically.
LO4-Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences
Commitment is very much necessary for learning anything out of your comfort zone. For me, learning drums was very much new and out of my comfort zone. Sparing time on a daily basis for the lessons related to drum beats became a little boring and hectic for me in the starting because I was already quite occupied with tasks related to my academics, etc. However, I was very determined that I want to learn at 2-3 different beats as soon as possible. While it is easy for me to commit to things I like, committing to something out of my comfort zone was quite difficult initially. However, I later realized that it is very important to show commitment towards anything we do in order to successfully accomplish the related goal.
