Monsoon Musings!!!

Monsoon musing was a literary event which was held at Fountainhead School, at 1 September 2018. This was the first edition of the event and our batch was given the opportunity to organize the event. I got the chance to organize this event as a decoration head. The event had 3 sections which included Poetry, Art stalls, and Seva Cafe. “Poetry” was the main focus of the event where students, parents, and teachers from grade 7 to Grade 12 were called to share their Literary piece with others where there was no language barrier. For “Art stalls” students were supposed to submit their artworks which were then displayed during the event. In “Seva cafe” the participants and visitors were allowed to pick and eat any food item they preferred there was no cost added to the items. If the person felt like giving money, they could put it in a donation box. There were many donation boxes set around the venue where they can put in any amount of money they want to. Same with Art stall and Poetry event where they can put in money as a token an appreciation. Also if someone like a painting from the art stall they could pick out that painting and put in any amount they felt like giving.

LO1:- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
The decor heads were also supposed to make the posters for the overall event. I knew I could make a poster that looks good to me but making a poster that would satisfy others and catch the eyes of everyone that passes by would be a challenge for me. So to solve that I thought of making 4 to 5 poster and ask my friends for feedback. The idea backfired as everyone had a different point of view for each poster. So I had to sit and analyze what each one of them said and tried my best to include all the possible suggests in the new poster that I designed.

LO2:-Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Becoming Head of Department was hard for me, due to me having an introvert nature. At the very being on the event, when we were supposed to give a written interview I was very scared that I will not get the role I wanted, and even if I did who will be my teammates, and who will be the other Decoration head with me? When we got the final list of people I was paired up with a senior whom I knew, so that worked out to be great and I also got a team of people whom I am close to and talk to on a regular base. The main challenge which then arrived was to Be a leader and act like one. I was not able to speak out loud and even If I did I had to make sure that it is not rude and that someone should not feel bad for what I was saying. It is my first time being a leader which was hard for me, we did end up having some disputes during the event but I knew I had to stay calm, if I do not I will end up being angry which will lead to more fights. Even with the disputes that we faced, we were able to reach the vision that we had planned for which we were appreciated by everyone! Being the Decor Head was a new step for me which will help me ahead when I will have to work together with new people and faces, I will have to make sure that At the end of every fight I stay calm.

One more challenge that we faced as a group was not getting the required materials on time resulting in sending numerous hangout to the teachers again and again to order resources. Due to the dealy, we had to take the work home as we did not get enough time in school.

LO5:- Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively
Working in a team is hard for me as I like to work alone also because I always think that if someone does not like my ideas I will not be able to persuade them that it is a good idea. We were also not able to delegate the work equally, resulting in 2 to 3 people doing more work than the others. One problem I think we faced in the group was of communication gap due to all of us having different free slots, we formed a group hangout to solve the issue which eventually solved the problem. Working in the group did divide the work making it a bit easy to handle everything and finish the decoration on time.

LO6:- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance
The money that was collected from the donation made was given to a charity. The main aim of the event was, also to give the writers and artist a stage where they can share their work and listen to others. We seem to have achieved our goal due to us receiving a lot of entry from all over the school and also from many parents.

This event has evoked an interest in event management in me. I realized that I enjoy decorating an event. I enjoyed every part of the process from planning to making everything and to set up everything. Yes, we did have disputes during the time but I realized that I will have to stay calm. We also received many such comments that even when the teachers were not invited for the event they visited it due to the ambience that was created, I also realized what it means to be a leader and how important it is to delegate the work between everyone equally. The highlight of the event was the donation that we received.
