Softball is very similar to baseball. Even though sports is not my favourite thing to do, I decided to join the Varsity Softball team during spring to get an experience of being part of a team on my exchange.
L1 – Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth
I discovered my strengths and weaknesses through this sport. I had good coordination and speed but the major drawbacks were that I was new to the sport and was very nervous. Not surprisingly, all of CAS activities made me realise that I had similar weaknesses for all of them. I want to overcome these drawbacks by continuing such activities throughout my life.
L4-commitment to and perseverance
Commitment and perseverance were a crucial part of my softball experience. We had practice every day after school. It was very difficult to remain committed and focused because I was also a part of my high school musical which had rehearsals everyday as well. I had to try to find rides everyday and if I didn’t find them, I had to walk even when it was snowing as it was a particularly long winter and bad weather for softball.
L2 – Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken developing new skills
Even though I faced so many challenges, I still wanted to continue this sport since I loved learning this new sport, and loved my team and coach. I developed new skills as I had never played such a sport before. I played with a bat for the first time in my life but my friends said I got much better at it over time.
L5- Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively
I also became very good friends with my teammates through softball. In any sport, a lot of collaboration is required amongst the teammates which makes the team stronger. We all knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses and we accepted and respected each other for who we were. Even if anyone made a mistake, we didn’t discourage her, instead we cheered her up to do well next time.
L7-Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Ethics are also very important when it comes to sports. We are expected to abide by the rules of the sport. Our team lost a lot of games since our main pitcher was injured. But we knew it was ethical to show sportsmanship and congratulate the winning team.
I’m glad I was a part of the Varsity Softball team. It taught me to respect everyone. It also made me open minded, balanced and a risk taker.
