Participating in a MUN

I had seen a lot of MUNs taking place recently and so I thought to take part in one too. The MUN I took part in was named GSP(Global Summit on Peace). I started doing ground research as to what committee I would fit the most. I was cleared as to the committee I would be being a part of and so I registered myself. The very first day, I came into the committee room, I was alone, I felt the solitude being alone, but then as people started coming in, I extended my nervous hands to shake them with everyone and create a bond of friendship. The first day, being one of the P5+1(1 of the 6 Permanent members of UN) Russia, I would have rarely spoken once during the whole day that too with hesitation. The second day was good enough as I had got some experience and so was confident to speak and I did receive good feedbacks.

Learning Outcomes Covered-

Lo1- Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth-

I was aware that my research skills were pretty good and the research I had collected was up to the mark and valid but then I was not able to speak out my research due to a few factors, first being not confident, second being shy and nervous, and third being: what if the points I spoke are incorrect and I say something against my stand. These were the things that were pulling me back from speaking. So I prepared myself for day 2 and on the second day, I started speaking my research and felt confident.

Lo2- Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills

The main challenge for me and the most difficult part for me was to know and find my allies, without allies support, no one can debate and speak well and that is why finding allies was the most difficult part because during the sessions, my allies were speaking against me and I got upset as to why are the delegates(a term given to the participants of MUN) who are my allies speaking against me. But in the break, I with the chair(the judge of the specific committee) went to the participant and made them aware that I am their Allie and so then we started collaborating together and debated as a team.

Lo6- Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

As I was the delegate of Russia, it was very crucial to give my inputs to the committee and so I started giving my points on day 2. It was very important to brainstorm and form a resolution for the global issue of the Counter-Terrorism Committee. In the final working paper, a few points were given by me which were agreed by the majority of the committee. Some Points from the final working paper were-
1) No Country should fund any terrorist activities. If found so, other nations should cut ties with them.
2) No Nation should intervene with other countries disputes physically.
3) No Nations should invade other nation or attack them.
The first point was recommended by me which was agreed by the majority. The final resolution was agreed by the committee and a resolution was passed.

Lo7- Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions

During the ongoing committee sessions, usage of electronic devices was strictly prohibited. The participant sitting next to me, though being a very good friend was using mobile phone sneakily to find counter back point on the allegations on him. At first I thought he might understand himself and stop, but he continued using his phone to find points, this was not accepted, I send a message to one of the organizers sitting in the room saying that my fellow participant is using a mobile phone for research, the participant was given a strict warning and the organizer appreciated me for my honesty.

My Takeaways-

  1. I developed research skills while researching for the information, Inquirer for questions the points made by participants, and communication to communicate my views.
  2. If I did the same activity again, I would be well prepared and boost up my confidence.
  3. I would also like to organize one like this as a MUN gives a society a view of how UN(United Nations) actually performs and also this increases the knowledge in students about the ongoing issues in the world.
