MONSOON MUSINGS!

Monsoon musings was a student-led poetry event that was held and organized in our school on 1 September 2018. The aim of the event was to gather people from various backgrounds who aspire to write and recite on one platform and showcase their inner talent and inspire others in the audience ( it included students from our schools, teachers, parents of the wards, their grandparents and other faculty). Along with the event we also had Seva Cafe which I was a part of, we served food and water during the poetry reading and people could pay whatever generous amount they felt was appropriate. We also had put up art stalls along with food which displayed art pieces of the students and various of them that could be sold by the artist. The amount generated from the event went to charity.

Learning outcomes which I have included :

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth.

During this event, I developed many skills such as communication, management, coordination skills an many more which when applied to my personal life helped me a lot such as managing my work on time et cetera. We had to come early to prepare snacks for the audience. I used my strength to cook food and learn a few things about taste as well. I and my friends were assigned to make coin idlies, I had an idea about how to make a regular one hence it was a strength that helped me while making the coin idlies. I and my group took the help of the people who knew how to cook to understand the proportion of the ingredients needed to make idlies well for a huge target audience and was assigned to prepare coconut chutney for it too. Hence, during it, I had gained an abundance of knowledge regarding cooking food and cooperation.

LO2: Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

Before the event, I had an understanding of cooking food and knew how to make idlies theoretically along with a few other dishes. The main challenge was to make the perfect coin idlies when done practically. I was lucky that we had some time before the event week so I practiced and cooked idlies a few times to achieve perfection so that I do well on an even day. My group also helped me with it. We also were backed up with help from the support staff to make the same. While preparing the items, My group learned many new things about cooking food and its rules and indulged with the first time experience of certain activities in the task. I felt very proud and satisfied with the outcome as I had used my theoretical knowledge into real life and complete the challenge I had taken upon and achieve skills that would be useful to me in the future.

LO4: Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences

My group started planning for the event before it was going to occur. We had a discussion on what did we wanted to make to make the experience of the audience great, the way we will be greeting them and the services we would b offering them such as preparing a plate and then providing it to the audience at the place they had settled who wasn’t able to. The decoration played a major level in making the event lavishing, We decorated the venue and stalls and had practiced certain things. However to make the audience’s experience memorable we decided to serve freshly cooked food for which we had to come early to school for it which helped us as we had time to do last-minute finishings to the dish we were going to serve.

LO5: Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively.

The most important factors for this event to go well as collaboration and communication. For preparing the food our group was divided according to the number of items we had to prepare and the quantity which was decided. With the important consideration skills, we were able to prepare delicious food before time and we had a huge support of the support staff’s help. This helped me learn the importance of time management, communication skills and team-building skills which would help me complete the tasks assigned to me with full efficiency.

I believe that 5 productive minds can do better than 1 productive mind and it also provides more skills and knowledge.

LO6: Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance.

During the time we were preparing things a lot of resources and food items well not handled nor managed properly. As it was against our school policy we cleaned all the mess we made and helped others to do so the same. We made sure that the food brought by the students for the event was carried in eco-friendly paper bags, steel containers, jute bags rather than harmfull plastic spoons. Along with making sure to use biodegradable spoons or wooden ones with the servings.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions.

As this event was a charitable fundraiser still it didn’t affect our dedication and hard work towards it which paid all of us by making the event a success. We willingly showed our presence and served all the visitors and catered to their needs whether they donated money or not. We ate all the leftovers keeping in mind the value of food and consequences waste.
