WAKANUI

This was a student-led event organized to understand the knowledge we gained outside the classroom of literature and consider the role of the language in cultural context. The theme for this event was a royal wedding and we were assigned into seven teams with different countries to represent. Our group got Morocco and the royal family that we selected was King Mohamad the sixth and Salma Benani of Morocco. The creative aspect in CAS is covered in this activity as we had to create our own text types (I created a wedding invitation card and as a group, we several texts and its analysis was required and done.

Learning outcomes achieved were:

LO1: Identify own strengths and develop areas of growth.

I knew about my potential in arts and decorative skills so I chose to make the wedding invitation card. I tried to make the card as creative and on the basis of how the royal family of Morocco would design it. It was a difficult process to do the research regarding the wedding invitation card as it’s designed had to have the essence of their customs and tradition considering their status. I had to put up information minimalizing the word content  Writing this text type made me better at my summarizing skill and research skills as well as my creative skills.

LO 2:  Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process.

As discussed above, one of the challenges faced was to make the text creative while keeping the customs and tradition in the limelight, I learned new skills of how to make text type creative and innovative which would attract the audience. One more problem I faced was public speaking, as I a person who won’t opt public speaking frequently, this event made my public speaking better as we had to present in front of students and teacher and they did asses us based on it, but gradually as I had done it several times and many familiar faces were there so it went smooth.

LO 3:  Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience

There was a lot of confusion at first in our group regarding how to go about the event and how to make the best work to present. Time constraint was an issue as a lot of IB submissions were on the way and a lot of work to be done in so less time. We all were clueless at first about our roles in the team, what text type to choose at a personal level depending upon the skills and strengths we had, how to present and who would be taking the leadership. We decided to divide the tasks according to the strengths and interests as only then best work would be presented. we had a deadline to work on our tasks. The event was on 10th January 2019 thus we kept the deadline as early as possible. Thus, planning and organizing things helped us have a successful event and presentation.

L4. Show perseverance and commitment in CAS experience

There were a lot of IB submissions along with studies and some moments during the project were there where demotivation took a toll on me from working effectively. It was when some of the group members had not completed the given task on the deadlines decided and sometimes there was confusion regarding how to function. But, then I thought that I am a member of the group and at the end, we as a group will be held responsible for not completing the work assigned to our group so I talked with the people who could not complete the assigned work and helped wherever it was needed and tried to complete it on time. And, in the end, it was done on time. It is usually not very easy for me to commit to the thing and do it with assigned deadlines, but when I am given a responsibility especially when I have chosen to take up responsibility by myself then I became committed to complete the task. In this project, I was an active group member and it was my responsibility to get the task assigned to be done. Usually one when is committed to something a purpose and drive is set and desired for it which happened with me.  I was dedicated to complete the activity so, the project functioned smoothly along with my friends and I was obliged to see that I and my group had done a really good job.

L5. Demonstrate skills and benefits of working collaboratively

The event we had undertaken definitely required a collaborative attempt. Working with others sometimes became difficult. In this project, it was a very comfortable environment for me to work as people were my classmates and guests were familiar to me. There were times when I had faced difficulty in working as sometimes the ideas were clashing between us team members. To solve this problem I had discussed with my team to put forward the ideas which connected with the main essence of the Moroccan culture the most, in the end, each of us had done our job very well. It is very important to work collaboratively with others as it is interlinked with all of our performances and it also acts as a source of motivation even on the days where someone is not feeling up creative and it provides that they are a part of a team and there’s a certainty that their efforts all together will help the team to progress further. In this project, it was very important for me to display communication skills as everyone had different skills. I developed good time management skills, social skills, and innovation skills along with research skills.

LO7: Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and action

Our group made sure that all the references and images we used ethically by siting it using MLA7 citation. As it is not ethical to take credits for someone else’s work. We made sure that the resources not exploited and wasted for decoration as well.
